Signs It Is Time to Replace Your Gutters

Some gutters can be saved. Others are a subscription of repairs. Here's how to tell which one is hanging on your house.

Signs that point to replacement

Multiple leaking seams: if your sectional gutters are dripping at more than one or two joints, the sealant is aging out everywhere at once. Resealing them all costs real money and buys a few years at best.

Sagging you can see from the street: when the gutter line dips and rises, either the hangers are failing across the run or the fascia behind them has gone soft. Both mean the system's foundation is gone.

Overflow right after clearing: if water still pours over the front edge when the gutters are clean, the system is undersized or the slope has settled out of true. No patch fixes a design problem.

Signs a repair may be enough

One localized problem — a section crushed by a limb, a single separated hanger, one failed end cap — on a system that's otherwise sound and less than 10–15 years old is usually worth repairing. We do that work and we'll tell you when it's the right call.

The honest test is age and pattern. One failure on a young system is an accident. Repeating failures on an old system are a trend, and paying to fight a trend is how homeowners spend replacement money one service call at a time.

What the water is doing while you decide

Failing gutters don't wait politely. Overflow saturates the soil at the slab edge — and on our clay soil, that swell-shrink cycle is exactly how foundation trouble starts. Fascia rot spreads behind gutters that hold standing water. The cost of the decision usually grows the longer it's deferred.

The Takeaway

One young, local failure: repair it. Multiple failures on an aging system: replace it. When it's a close call, get both numbers itemized in writing — we'll show you the math either way.
