New Home Gutter Checklist

Whether it's new construction or a full replacement, this is the checklist we'd want our own family using before signing any gutter quote.

Before anyone quotes you

Walk your lot after a hard rain and note where water stands, which beds wash out, and where the roof visibly sheets over. Photograph it. Those observations are design inputs a good installer will use — and a quick test of a bad one, who won't ask.

Know your tree situation honestly: what leans over the roof, what drops needles versus leaves, what the builder planted that will be 30 feet tall in a decade. Guards are much cheaper as part of the initial system than as a later retrofit.

What the quote must include

Itemized linear footage per gutter size, downspout count and sizes with locations, guard type by name (not just 'gutter protection'), tear-off and haul-away if replacing, color selection, fascia condition notes, a committed start date, and the guarantee terms in writing.

If a quote is one number on a page — or arrives by phone without anyone climbing a ladder at your house — that's not a quote, it's an opening bid. Every surprise line item later was a detail skipped now.

Questions that reveal the installer

How do you size downspout capacity for this roof? (Right answer involves roof area, not a shrug.) What hangers do you use and how are they fastened? (Hidden hangers into structural wood.) How will I know what happened each day? (Specific communication commitment — ours is a photo by 5PM, in writing.) What happens if something's wrong after you finish? (A defined response window, also in writing.)

None of these are gotcha questions. Installers who do the work well answer them happily, because the answers are their sales pitch.

The Takeaway

The system is decided before the first rivet: honest lot assessment, an itemized quote, and an installer who commits communication and guarantees to paper. Get those three right and the metal takes care of itself.
